Assignments:

Have students write their own ending to this story. Do they stay on the island? Are they rescued? Do they build a raft and take to the seas?

While on the island, what type of fish could they anticipate catching for food?

Using a salt and water mixture, demonstrate how you could produce fresh water.

After deciding what items to take with you when leaving the sinking ship, use the Internet to learn what "experts" recommend and why. Write about how you would revise your list with this new knowledge.

Students should include details for all possible scenarios.
